Space planes first take off like normal aeroplanes, with oxygen from the air and carried by their wings, but shift to rocket drive in the upper atmosphere where oxygen is inadequate. Having to carry less oxygen reduces the weight and thus the need to carry fuel as well, making it a form of better launches. Winged takeoff also means carrying less fuel.
